2018 Training Sessions

PtC 2015 Light Station Tng
Whether you are a new or existing volunteer or want to explore new opportunities at Point Cabrillo Light Station, we offer docent training classes each year before Whale Festival (March 3-4 and 17-18). The 2018 schedule of classes appears below.

There are many volunteer opportunities. You may volunteer in the 1909 Lighthouse, help with Whale Festival, lead tours of the 300-acre State Historic Park, interpret Marine Science, or show off and interpret the history of the First Assistant Light Keeper’s Home.

Marine Science Docent Training

Wednesday, January 31, 11am to 2pm.  Experience the Marine Science exhibit and learn about the organisms that live in the salt water aquarium. Meet in the Smithy, the location of the Marine Science exhibit.  Bring a sack lunch. Contact: Sarah Grimes (707-813-7925).

IMPORTANT! Please schedule your Marine Science Whale Festival shift at this training or call Sarah with your preferred date (707-813-7925) or e-mail Tanya.Smart@comcast.net.

First Assistant Lightkeeper’s House History

Saturday, February 3rd, 10am to noon. Explore the history, restoration and stories of those that lived and worked at Point Cabrillo.  Meet downstairs at The First Assistant Lightkeeper’s House (East House). Contact: Ginny Wade (wwade@mcn.org).

Frolic History

Saturday February 3rd, 1pm to 3pm.  Learn to tell engaging stories that highlight core history & key personalities: integrating gold rush era turning points (the birth of SF & CA, the Frolic, Jerome Ford, Mendocino pioneer days, statehood) with the SF 1906 Earthquake (destruction, CA rebuilding, birth of PC LH) — plus how Tom Layton’s unexpected 1984 Frolic rediscovery and ’92 book advanced the community efforts.  Meet upstairs at the First Assistant Lightkeeper’s House (East House).  Contact: Robert Becker (rbecker@cal.net).

If you want to attend both trainings on February 3rd, bring a sack lunch for the break.

Lens Tour training/refresher

Saturday February 10th, 11am.  Discover how the 3rd Order Fresnel Lens, Federal Aid to Navigation, functions today and its history. Be a part of the team that helps with lens tours, a significant source of income for Point Cabrillo.  NEW and EXPERIENCED docents are strongly encouraged to attend. Contact: Steve Nilson (snilson_mendo@sbcglobal.net). (underline between nilson and mendo)

Restoration History and Lighthouse History

Saturday February 10th, 1-3 pm.  We will look at Bruce Rogerson’s excellent slide show and discuss how to interpret the history and restoration of our working Lighthouse.  NEW and EXPERIENCED docents are encouraged to attend.  Meet upstairs at The First Assistant Lightkeeper’s House (East House). Contact: Tanya Smart (Tanya.Smart@comcast.net).

If you want to attend both trainings on February 10th, bring a sack lunch for the break.

Whale Docent Training

Saturday February 17th, 10am to 3pm.  This year we are doing something a bit different. We will focus on interpretation – and how to use the adaptations and natural history of the California Gray Whale to engage the public. Docents and naturalists from other groups are welcome to attend. Meeting place to be determined by how many of you RSVP.  Bring a sack lunch.  Contact: Tanya Smart, (Tanya.Smart@comcast.net).
