Looking Back at 2017

Dear PCLK Volunteers, Friends and Supporters,

As we look forward to a New Year, it is once again my privilege and honor to report all the amazing activities that were made possible by you, our wonderful volunteers, friends and supporters.

Despite a very wet and long winter, painting did happen. The Head Lightkeeper’s House, cottage and parts of the Second Assistant’s House received new coats of paint. Most noticeable is the newly brilliant red roof of the Head Lightkeeper’s House which shines for ships at sea and visitors on land. Work on the Lighthouse lantern room deck was also started with more to come in 2018.

Projects for 2018 include the entrance floor and exterior of the Lighthouse. Less visible to visitors will be the ongoing progress on plans to rebuild the historic Barn.
The PCLK Board met to update our planning documents and discuss the future of the PCLK and Point Cabrillo Light Station State Historic Park. Planning for the future, while not as exciting as painting buildings, is an important part of preserving the past and continuing the progress we’ve made.

We should not take for granted the day to day activities for which we are known, as these are our most spectacular accomplishments. We are proud that the Lighthouse, First Assistant Lightkeeper’s House and Marine Science exhibit are open every day of the year and give thanks to our Retail Docents for enabling this to happen. Our Education Program staff illuminate the natural and cultural history of Point Cabrillo for more than 1000 students every year. The aquarium in the Marine Science Exhibit is healthy and thriving thanks to the volunteers and staff who care for it. The whales showed up for our annual Whale Festival and helped us fund the Education Program. History Docents led groups large and small in tours from April through October. Our volunteers came to share food and stories with each other at the annual picnic in September. Our “routine” creates our success and is the reason that Point Cabrillo Light Station State Historic Park shines.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I want to thank you for all the work you did this past year. Whether you are new to our organization or a volunteer with thousands of hours, every accomplishment is due to your dedication and support.

Sincerely,
Tanya Smart, President
Point Cabrillo Lightkeepers Association
