As
we sail into 2017 it is my privilege and honor to report all the
wonderful progress that was made possible by you, our brilliant
volunteers, friends and supporters.
The 1st Assistant
Lightkeeper’s House has a new red roof! Once again volunteers stepped
up to help prep the wood shingles at Steve and Kath’s house, making our
hard earned dollars go further. The brilliant red roof is getting rave
reviews from visitors. Next year the Head Lightkeeper’s Houses will be
painted from top to bottom. Stay tuned as we discover whether the
inspection says we can just paint rather than replace that roof.
With
the purchase and installation of a powerful standby generator, we can
welcome winter storms with fewer worries. The Light will stay on, as
will the heat and power for our vacation rental guests.
An
extra lens tour was added this year to raise funds for our neighbors
who needed help after the Clayton Fire. Our regularly scheduled lens
tours were also popular with visitors. Thanks to all who came out to
help.
Perhaps
the most spectacular accomplishment for 2016 is that our organization,
led and run by volunteers, can take for granted the day to day
activities for which we are known. The Lighthouse, First Assistant
Lightkeeper’s House and Marine Science exhibit were open every day of
the year thanks to our Retail Docents. Our Education Program staff met
and inspired more than 1000 students who came to experience the natural
and cultural history of Point Cabrillo. The aquarium in the Marine
Science Exhibit is healthy and thriving thanks to the volunteers and
staff who care for it. Whale Festival raised enough to fund the
Education Program despite weather challenges. Docents led groups large
and small in tours from May through October. Our volunteers came to
share food and stories with each other at the
annual barbecue in September. Our “routine” creates our
success and is the reason that Point Cabrillo Light Station State
Historic Park shines.
On
behalf of the Board of Directors, I want to thank you for all the work
you did this past year. Whether you are new to our organization or a
volunteer with thousands of hours, every accomplishment is due to your
dedication and support.
Sincerely,
Tanya Smart, President
Point Cabrillo Lightkeepers Association
