END OF SUMMER IN SIGHT—CHECK OFF "VISIT POINT CABRILLO"

National Lighthouse Day is coming up on August 5th. Make plans to tour the lantern room and the beautifully restored 3rd order Fresnel lens from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Allow time for the half mile walk to the lighthouse. Tickets are $5.00 per person; the fee supports the lighthouse maintenance fund. The tours are a treat for the whole family but please note that children must be at least 42 inches tall to participate.
There will be one last lens tour for the summer on 9/23.

We’ve had a bumper crop of visitors, school groups and adult tour groups. Wonderful opportunities to interpret, instruct and welcome have been plentiful. The work to keep these opportunities going is unrelenting but joyful.

The spectacular restoration activity this summer is painting the Head Keeper’s House! The good news is that we do not need a new roof, the old one just needs a new coat of paint. We will be thrilled to witness the transformation from faded pink to brilliant red. The rest of the house will be painted as well.

The iron railing around the lantern room has a short lifespan in the challenging weather conditions of the Point. It needs to be replaced. Our commitment to historic accuracy means it will look just the same but we may try a less vulnerable material.

In the painting department, we will also paint the exterior of the West House (not the roof). The little building by the water tank (the one missing a bunch of siding) is also being restored and will be painted.

And last but not least! The Smithy doors will be converted slide-left-and-right barn doors so that we will have fewer issues with opening and closing with a strong south wind!!

What else have we been working on that you can’t see?

We’ve started the process of planning and permitting to rebuild the Barn. While construction will not happen immediately, there is that pesky detail of raising money to pay for it, starting the process will help us identify the width of that particular monetary problem.

HEAD LIGHTKEEPER'S HOUSE                     ORIGINAL 1909 BARN

PCLK Volunteers and Supporters are cordially invited to the annual PCLK Volunteer celebration and recognition party on Sunday, September 17th!

We’ll start in the front yard of the First Assistant Lightkeeper’s House at 1 p.m. This is our chance to mingle, eat and appreciate the accomplishments of the last year. There will be pins.

This year the theme will be “Pizza and Potluck." Point Cabrillo Lightkeepers Association will supply the pizza, and drinks. Volunteers and supporters are asked to bring the usual delicious potluck items. In the spirit of stewardship of the planet, we encourage everyone to save on paper and plastic by bringing your own plates, cups and utensils. We’ll have backup paper and plastic for those who forget.

Important! Please RSVP to (giftshop@pointcabrillo.org) so we know how many pizzas to order. Let's not run out!
