Guest House Museum
The Mendocino Coast has quite a few house museums, and the Guest House Museum in Fort Bragg has got to be one of our favorites! With two stories full of information and exhibits, you can easily spend hours inside its doors, learning the history of the Mendocino Coast. While there is a third story, it is unfortunately not open to the public at this time.
The Guest House was built in 1892 by the Fort Bragg Redwood Company, as a home for the owners of the Fort Bragg logging and milling operation. The Johnson family only lived there for a few years before they moved to the Bay Area, and the house transitioned into a guest house for special visitors to the mill and logging sites. The home is built primarily out of old-growth redwood, and is a testament to the beauty and solidarity of our local forests.
Today, the Guest House Museum has exhibits dedicated to the Pomo indigenous people, the logging and fishing industries, the old fort and much more. It is operated by the Fort Bragg-Mendocino Coast Historical Society, and is entirely volunteer-run.
There is a suggested $2 entry fee per person to tour the house for as long as you like! Their hours vary from season to season, so be sure to check their website before visiting.
