Santa Barbara Lighthouse

Santa Barbara, California (no longer standing)
First lit: December 1, 1856

On December 1, 1856, the Santa Barbara Lighthouse was lit for the first time, with Albert Johnson Williams as Head Keeper. Just a few years after taking the position, he grew weary of his duties, and his wife took over. Julia Williams held the position of Head Keeper until 1905, raising five children at the same time.

In 1925, an earthquake tragically leveled the Santa Barbara Lighthouse. While all the keepers made it out safely, the building itself could not be saved.
